So this is my almost latest painting. Most of the tape is painted... (This doesn't mean I painted on top of blue tape, I painted the paper and a small part of the board to look like blue tape). I've been thinking a lot about notions of immortallity and the comfort painting gives me... to make physical manifestations of my ideas that are (at least) less temporeal than I am. Maybe this is a weakness? Maybe I should do more valient actions worth retelling (saving lives, whatnot) rather than making objects that hang around and take up the little space I (we) have. I don't know (my new favorite thing to say during critique). Not to brag but the blue tape most definately asks for a double take. I feel this is a good way to question the validity of art, making art that is skilled and labored but unnoticable. What do you think?

Me as characters in old movies... but it has evolved into me as my family along with art stars, movie stars, ect. in the interior of my grandfathers house (a painting I'm working on). More to come. I finished this double portrait and then started a fun one. I was on a roll and had massive painting energy and decided to make something out of an old painting that no one liked... first I attacked it with spraypaint and then thick, sticky white housepaint that wouldn't spread. I really like the effect-- and of course it looked weathered and old -- so I'm working on an old photograph of the person I live with and his late father for the hall that shows through the dining room. I've never painted something for a place in a house -- but since the canvas was already wasted -- why not :) I'm really excited about the decorative look of it -- and the size. I probably would have never painted something like this on this scale (42" x 40") if it weren't for the recycling...

GLITTER!!

So I decided that glitter was absolutely necessary in my paintings -- all of the childish beauty and sparkliness. I first used it in the portrait of Tisa and James lightly in the background -- then realized that it would be perfect on the portrait of Victor -- with all of his 'over the topness.'

I'm really really excited about playing with this new medium :D

Richard Serra with Bride and Groom...

Here are a couple of shots I did with my clients Noelle and Jon just before their reception. The sun was setting and I saw the sculpture and thought it might be fun to wander inside. The light was insane and created a glow like I have never seen. The rusty quality of the sculpture created texture and color that inspires me still.

This will not be my last encounter with this piece. Thank you for your beautiful creation Richard Serra.

Tisa was down the other weekend and I was running around with her while she was working on a video... one of our stops was this Serra at South Coast Plaza.

It's a tower made from slightly curved rectangles -- the top is open in a pentagon-type shape. Sound inside is magnified and sent out the top like an amplifier. Even the tiniest sounds are made huge when you're standing inside.

R. Crumb

Last Saturday I went to The Hammer to view R. Crumb's newest works. He has illustrated the entire book of Genesis, and it is amazing. It was really cool to re-read the stories through R. Crumbs eyes. I expected something rather blasphemous, but found his approach to the illustrations rather direct and literal.

The pieces I found most intriguing were the illustrations of God. I really like how he depicted light with black and white directional lines. I also found the sex scenes to be humorous and quite typical of Crumb.

The show is great, and I seriously recommend it!... If you don't get a chance to see it, at least pick up a copy of the book... it's only $24.95.

Remember me talking about trying to paint objects instead of people? Ha... its weird the strange ideas we get. How we try to steer ourselves away from what is naturally flowing out of us. I tried one painting and it died. Now I'm back to my old ways... pic soon. It's still just a drawing. It's important to follow your instincts even if the little voices say that what you're doing won't work...or in my case, fears that my work is too personal and others can't relate to it.

Yeah I'm a bit lost as to where I'm going...but just going to keep painting.

This was my creation for last night's festivities. I made this in a parking lot on the way to the party. :) Amazing creativity here!

Working on a portrait in between paintings. I'm thinking of trying to do it as a side thing in addition to teaching and making my own paintings. This one is just relaxing craft -- Tru's mother who passed away 16 years ago and a family friend -- going to give it to his grandma. I really do enjoy doing portraits but of course want to mess them up and can't....

I didn't get to photograph them, but I did ask Hilary to stipulate that I would be able to borrow them when I have a show of my entire series. At that time I will photograph them so you can see.

Actually.. when I have a show of my series you ladies better be there in person.. so you will be able to see them in real life!

I am happy to get the extra money, and I am also excited because this is the first time I have sold my work as fine art. Typically when I sell I create an illustration that has been directed by a client. This is the first time I have made something just for me, and someone actually wanted it.

It really does make me realize that I need to get my work out there.

I'm thinking about volunteering to write for a blog that documents the downtown LA artwalk.... should be cake for me and will force me to get down there and actually talk to people.

But is that a good investment of my time? And I would need a sub the first thursday of every month and lose out on pay.........

There are so many different options for hanging it... I don't know. Maybe it doesn't even need the light. Maybe it needs both lights or maybe only the interior one??? If it goes to the floor it feels to interior design-ish, maybe. Pin it with more random tension or centered tension or what? I fucking love it and will have reason for everything soon... I think... What do you guys think? Also I've been reading color theory for the first time today. Good stuff. That burn I've been talking about has a name... After Images. Crazy right. Also that drawing of the few contour lines of a wave like shape was finally turned into a sculpture. Its about 18" x 24". I think I'm going to wrap it in fabric too. Pictures soon. I also went to the Downtown art walk. As always it was alright, free white wine but no food, can you believe it! Bull shit! Art was soso. A little better than SA... about the same as the Brewery maybe, or maybe Bergamot on a bad night without food. Anyways love you guys. Miss you to the max.

They were 6x6 oil paintings of my industrial landscape series. I had to finish them last night
for Hilary's charity event, so there is a chance I will never see them again.

How does a photographer forget to take a photo?

Flesh colored spandex over metal with a florescent light. Mostly 1/4 inch wire. It's 3 feet wide, about 3.5 feet long and the fabric goes to the ground. The picture sucks but there are parts that go in like orifices and crevices and whatnot... parts also stick out (around a foot from the wall in a few places). I'm not really happy with the pinning of the fabric yet so it still needs a few adjustments. But ya... I think I'm on to something. I'll put a better picture up soon.

so I used gesso as a glue to stick peelings of paint onto some doves I painted. I realize that there is a 90% chance that these things are just going to peel off -- but since I don't normally work with forethought enough to do it right the first time, I'm curious to see what I come up with to keep them on... sewing? epoxy? massive sealant job over the whole canvas? or will what happens after they fall off be a whole new mess of interesting... fingers crossed....

We were in the studio alone, and with one or the other -- or all three. Imagine this blog as three corners that we can come and view any time.

I've been working on all sorts of crazy stuff (some of which I already destroyed and did not photograph). But here are the few works I have photos of. The two white ones are part of a series of 8 embossed drawings. The odd man out was a play of perspective with an over head with a strip of sky and grass or earth. The other two are a part of the continuation of the drawing I did for the paper show. I want to try to do decisionless art (I see that in your art val) but ya, I don't know. This is odd (this whole blogging thing) I feel like I'm repeating myself. Leanne you better talk to me lady otherwise this seems kinda silly... Otherwise Val, I don't really understand the point of all of these different ways of communicating. Why couldn't this just be an email or a Facebook thing, or even a phone conversation like last night? It's odd all this ephmera... I don't really think its my style. Is this just for the sake of being able to communicate on our own terms and in a segregated environment? We are here to write about and look at art, yes? Or is this mock stoodyo? A place to vent and fuck about? Alright... truly I digress. But I'm still confused. And so this formatting! Love you guys. Miss you dearly.

but i have a few ideas for two new ones -- just have to get the canvases ready. They will be smaller -- and of inanimate objects. Maybe those will be easier to let go of?

and yes that's the photo stuck to it.... :) I'm liking this one because there isn't a clear face -- which makes it not so much of a 'portrait' -- hopefully leaving some openness in. I think the only other one that's similar is the yellow dress painting -- my first one. There's no head :)
